General Information: Camps are offered at the Minnesota Sword Club's facilities; a number for beginners and two for experienced fencers. The kids pair up with fencers their own age so a variety of ages during a camp doesn't really matter. The camps for experienced fencers are the intermediate camp for fencers who took earlier camps and the advanced camp for highly experienced fencers. The separation in skill level between the beginner and intermediate camps is not very great but the advanced camp requires a lot of knowledge plus your own electrical equipment. All camps are half day long and run Monday through Friday for one week. They are all designed to be fun while teaching the sport.
Beginner's camps are designed to turn new fencers into experienced ones. Due to the concentrated nature of these camps we have been extremely successful in quickly developing fencers. We cover the history of the sport; basic concepts of blade work and foot work, and teach both concentration and awareness for fencing. The summer camps for beginners teaches the skills, rules and game of the sport. We introduce the basic concepts of attack and defense the first two days and then reinforce the knowledge by using all three weapons of fencing, foil, saber and epee. All new fencers are bouting by the end of the first day. Many games relating to fencing and other more specific developmental activities of the sport are included to round out the program. Fun games are used to teach strategy and awareness. The strategic and awareness skills taught during the camp carry over to other sports making your child a better athlete. The camp is both a learning experience and fun. To register click here for on-line registration or click here for U.S. Mail Registration.
Intermediate Camp, it is for fencers who have had at least one camp earlier in the summer or in previous summers. It reviews the concepts already taught but goes into more depth of concepts and technique. Situational competitive exercises and bouting are emphasized after the conceptual, perceptual and technical exercises are completed. Strategy and awareness skills are a part of all practices and transfers to other sports along with increased body awareness. But most of all, the camp is fun. Advanced Camp, "The Fencer's Methodology of Training" Manual is used to teach how to develop a winning strategy for particular opponents and for an entire competition. The camp is an intensive training sessions in technique, perception, strategy and bouting. Competitions will be part of each week's program with an analysis by the coach on how the fencer should direct his/her own development. This is the only time during the year when such an in-depth comprehensive analysis is made of the topic on strategy. The camp is fun and a great learning experience for competitive fencers. It is a major step from the intermediate camp and requires at least 100 hours of fencing experience. To register click here for the on-line registration or click here for U.S. Mail Registration.
