Banned Medications

"Every fencer is reminded that there are OVER THE COUNTER MEDICATIONS which contain banned substances. If anyone tests positive on a drug test given by the USFA or the USOC, it means an automatic three-month suspension regardless of the happenstance. This is a serious violation. Even though a fencer may need medication to feel better, it's important to verify its ingredients if he/she intends to compete. ASK FIRST, by calling the USOC DRUG HOTLINE AT 1-800-233-0393. Request a list of banned drugs and medications. If your doctor needs to prescribe a certain medication ask him or her to call this hotline number to ensure it does not contain a banned substance."

Tests are taken at all national and international meets. Medalists are always tested, half of the other finalists are tested based on a random draw and a few semifinalists are randomly tested. The test is a urine analysis which follows rigid Olympic Committee guidelines. Fencers to be tested are informed immediately upon completion of their event and must stay with the chaperone until the sample is produced. This is considered a very serious matter by national and international organizations.
